The difference may reflect disparities in treatment and access to care—in Egypt, survivors received medical assistance, on average, in less than 2 days following symptom onset, while those who died did not access care for 6 days. The H5N1 strain circulating in Egypt belongs to clade 2. As has been evident with the H1N1 influenza pandemic, no one can predict where and when a pandemic will arise.
In the case of the H5N1 virus, no one can predict whether or when it will become efficiently transmissible from person to person. But the likelihood of that occurrence has not changed in the last year.
The disease is widespread in tropical regions such as Africa, Asia and the Americas, with about 90 percent of cases occurring in the African region.
Plasmodium, the parasite that causes malaria, gets into a person's blood through a mosquito bite and travels from there to the liver, where it sits silently and reproduces for days.
Eventually, the parasites, hidden inside liver cell membranes, escape the liver to invade the blood, infect red blood cells, and disrupt the blood supply to other organs. Tuberculosis TB has been traced back as far as 17, years ago, but is still not entirely under control today.
In the past two decades, the TB death rate dropped almost by half. In , 8. More than 95 percent of TB deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries. Although TB is curable, a worrisome form of TB that is resistan t to most available and effective drugs multidrug-resistant TB is present in virtually all countries, according to the WHO. Scientists in Cyprus said the new strain was a combination of both Delta and the milder variant, Omicron - which is now dominant in the UK. But experts have now warned that it's not real and that it's the discovery is likely down to an issue at the lab.
The new discovery was made by a research team led by Leondios Kostrikis, professor of biological sciences at the University of Cyprus. The team have identified 25 such cases and data shows the relative frequency of the combined infection is higher among patients hospitalised due to Covid.
The variant was called Deltacron due to the identification of omicron-like genetic signatures within the delta genomes, Kostrikis explained.
